Job Description
Introduction
The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome (MLW) Programme (https://devsite.mlw.mw) is an internationally recognized centre for research and research training, funded by the Wellcome Trust. In collaboration with the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), College of Medicine. MLW would like to engage the services of a competent and dynamic individual to work in an exciting Research Programme (The PRONE Study) at the MLW Research facility as it is expanding.
The aim of the PRONE study is to determine the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in pregnancy. PRONE stands for; Pregnancy & Recognition Of NCDs Early. These NCDs include diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and anaemia. We aim to recruit 812 pregnant women from Ndirande health centre and Chikwawa District Hospital at their antenatal booking appointment. They will be followed until the end of the pregnancy and a select few will be seen again postpartum.
Responsibilities
Job Summary
To oversee the recruitment and follow-up of pregnant women in the PRONE study. This posts will be based at Ndirande Health Centre (with occasional travel to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital) and Chikwawa District Hospital. You will work closely with a Field Worker at the same study site and you will be in close contact with the Principal Investigator (Dr Jack Milln). You will ensure that the study is conducted in accordance with the study protocol and procedures, SOPs, GCP and that the collected data are accurate and valid.
Staff employed at Chikwawa District Hospital will be expected to reside within Chikwawa during the week.
General Tasks
- Screening and enrolment of pregnant women at their antenatal booking appointment.
- Completion of informed consent form, enrolment questionnaire, biophysical measurements, finger-prick blood tests, and standard venepuncture.
- Collection of pregnancy outcome data either in-person on the postnatal ward, or by telephone.
- Liaison with healthcare workers at Ndirande health centre and QECH regarding the collection of pregnancy outcome data.
- Collection of clinical information from participant’s clinical notes as part of audit of clinical care.
- Assist the PI to oversee operational, administrative and HR matters.
- Assist the PI in the description, definition and preparation of source documents.
- Assist the PI with other tasks at the PI’s discretion.
- Ensure all essential documents are in place and updated as required, ensure document control.
- Assist in the maintenance and development of a study database to track participants’ progress through the study, and monitor follow-up and participant adherence.
- Ensure study statistics are maintained to monitor study recruitment targets, and subject retention figures.
- Assist the PI in checking data for errors and ensuring answering and documentation of any queries raised.
- Ensure adequate quality control and quality assurance systems are in place.
- Preparation for, and facilitation of, monitoring visits, audits and/or inspections.
- Assist with the notification and reporting of Serious Adverse Events to Sponsor, or relevant Research Ethics Committees and Regulatory Authority, as appropriate.
- Prepare for Study closure and archiving of essential documents in accordance with local policy.
Requirements
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Diploma nurse technician
- 1-2 years of experience working within a research study
Desirable:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing and midwifery
- 1-2 years’ experience working clinically as a midwife .
Skills, General and Special knowledge
- Passionate to improve Women’s health in Malawi and participate in advocacy work around NCDs in pregnancy
- Be empathetic to sensitive issues in Women’s Health
- Have an understanding and interest in underlying medical problems in pregnancy
- Appreciate the utility of research is forming policy and clinical standards
- Knowledge of and compliance with national standards of clinical governance and audit
- Excellent organizational and co-ordination skills
- Articulate with outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Flexible but with good time management and team working skills others.
- Excellent records management and document control experience
- Excellent time management and punctuality
- Experience of using electronic data capture systems preferable.
- Self-motivated and able to deliver results and work out of hours when required to complete tasks.
- Fluency in Chichewa. Knowledge of other languages spoken in Malawi will be an added advantage.
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Experience of working and living at community level in Blantyre or Chikwawa Districts, Malawi
Health & Safety
- Taking full responsibility for ensuring a safe work environment by following health and safety rules at all times for colleagues and oneself.
- Keeping up to date and maintain awareness of all Health and Safety issues by fulfilling the following;
- Attending the scheduled quarterly Health & Safety sensitization trainings at least once a year
- Attend a Health and safety induction during the first week of employment, signing acknowledgement and keep abreast of the MLW Health and Safety Policies and their updates
- Participating in Risk management exercises
- Bring to discussion all H&S matters observed/experienced during work and meetings
- Orient Radio Listening Groups and other stakeholders on Health & Safety issues in clear and simple terms.
- Be available to assist when there is an emergency.
- To immediately notify the Line Manager of all Accidents/incidents and potential hazards/near misses and to complete the MLW Incident Report Form.
Error of Judgment
Failure to abide by the Health & Safety protocols and putting one-self, colleagues and Stakeholders at risk and failure to attend 1 Health & Safety session a year, will lead to disciplinary action.
All staff are employed under the MLW Programme and are ultimately responsible to the Programme whether directly employed under the Core Grant, a Research Fellowship or project grant. All staff are expected to be flexible and may be required to contribute to the activities of the Core Programme or other projects.
