Job Description

Medical Doctor – 1 post based in Blantyre (initial 12 months contract with the possibility of renewal)

Job Summary:

The appointee will be expected to provide clinical management of patients recruited into the Triple iNTS Vaccine study according to clinical protocols and manage the study site.

Responsibilities

Managerial

• To conduct regular study team meetings to evaluate and plan study activities.
• To oversee the implementation of the study

Professional

• To work as part of a clinical team of doctors, clinical officers, nurses, and other health professionals.
• To be a member of the Medical Council of Malawi and maintain a program of continued professional development.
• To punctually report for work and behave professionally at all times.
• To provide good quality clinical care to patients and study subjects according to the ward, study, and Triple protocol; and to provide support to guardians on Triple vaccine Trial.
• To adhere to the principles of Good Clinical Practice.
• To maintain the confidentiality of patients’ records and respect patients’ and guardians’ privacy and rights.
• To maintain infection control procedures at all times according to ward and hospital protocols.
• To keep participant safe
• To keep the patient/guardian/parent informed at all times.
• To keep clear and up-to-date patient records at all times.
• To take instructions from those in authority.
• To be aware at all times of responsibilities pertaining to the post (as recorded in this document).
• To attend MLW seminars and meetings both external and internal.

General Tasks

• To conduct clinical management of Participants in the study during recruitment and follow-up as needed.
• To perform history taking, physical examination, and treatment prescription as per study protocol and Ministry of Health Guidelines.

Specific Tasks

• To ensure that the study is conducted according to protocol.
• To assess medical safety for recruited participants.
• To monitor the quality of data collected.
• Any further tasks deemed reasonable that the Principal Investigator or medical staff may see fit to request

Health & Safety

• Taking full responsibility for ensuring a safe work environment by following health and safety rules at all times for colleagues and oneself.
• Keeping up to date and maintaining awareness of all Health and Safety issues by fulfilling the following.
o Attending the scheduled quarterly Health & Safety sensitization training at least Once a year
o Attend a Health and safety induction during the first week of employment, signing acknowledgment and keeping abreast of the MLW Health and Safety Policies and their updates
o Participating in Risk management exercises
o Bring to discussion all H&S matters observed/experienced during work and meetings
o Orient other stakeholders on Health & Safety issues in clear and simple terms.
o Be available to assist when there is an emergency.
• To immediately notify the Line Manager of all Accidents/incidents and potential hazards/near misses and to complete the MLW Incident Report Form.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

• MBBS with at least 3 years’ experience research experience
• At least 3 years’ experience in Research setting.
• S/he should be registered with Medical Council of Malawi.

Key Competencies

• Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Experience in facilitating health related program trainings.
• Experience in working in a maternity unit.
• Understanding of the ethical principles underlying conduct of research
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team and with people at all levels.
• Able to work flexibly.
• Self-motivated and able to deliver results and work out of hours when required to complete tasks.
• Excellent communications skills.
