MLW Staff Armed with Cybersecurity Tools

MLW conducted a Cyber Security Awareness week from 3–8 March. During this week, Turtle Technology Limited trained MLW staff on “The Fundamentals of Cybersecurity”.

The awareness week was aimed at educating and improving staff’s overall incident response capabilities and enhancing their cybersecurity awareness.
Speaking during one of his presentations, a representative from Turtle Tech Exile Njoka said the rate at which cyber security crimes are happening is alarming and only those armed with cyber security knowledge can overcome cyber frauds.

“Most people take data for granted. They forget that in this modern age, people are identified with their data. Now if someone tampers with their data, it can ruin their reputation and career,” Njoka emphasised.

This was the first time MLW has ever conducted cybersecurity training. The training targeted Administrators, Project Managers, Field Research Assistants, The Senior Management Team, and Heads of Departments.

A Field Research Assistant Nancy Gong’ong’o shared her experience at the end of one session: “There was a day when a person hacked my WhatsApp account and demanded a huge sum of money (I ended up deleting the account because I didn’t have the sum he was demanding).”

Gong’ong’o said when she saw an email from the IT department inviting staff for the training, she did not give it a second thought because she learned the hard way. After completing the training, she patted the IT department on the back for this life-changing training.

In response to the praises, IT Conference Coordinator Lucia Katengeza said their department arranged the training to aware staff of the significance of data and how people can use it to ruin individuals and organisations.

“Moving forward, I hope people will be alert and always stand on their guard to protect their cyber life” Katengeza added.

The theme for the awareness week is “Our data, Our Responsibility.”
